Back From GenCon With A New Hat

GenCon was fantastic, as I talked about on both HG,WT: For A Few Games More #13 and the entire run of This Just In From GenCon. What I didn't talk about on either of those, however, is something that I'm nervously excited about.

As reported in ICv2, I was elected to the Board of Directors of the Game Manufacturers Association (GAMA) at GenCon. This is the organization that puts on both the Origins Game Fair in Columbus and the GAMA Trade Show (GTS) in Las Vegas. What does that mean? Well, as a Director-at-Large, I've got a seat on the board, but no specifically defined role. According to the GAMA by-laws the job of the Board of Directors is to manage and monitor the "property, affairs, activities, and concerns of the association" but not to run the organization on a day-to-day basis. (That responsibility falls to the Executive Director, currently Anthony Gallela, and his staff.) We operate at the strategical level, rather than the tactical. So it mostly means that I'm going to be involved in a lot of strategy discussions about how help the industry, and that quite frankly, excites me. (There will be real work involved, too.)

This is a big new challenge for me, and, as I said, I'm nervously excited about it. I want to thank Michelle Nephew and Hal Mangold, who were also elected to the Board, for convincing me to do this and making it happen. I'm cautiously optimistic about the sorts of things the new Board can get done.

Also, I have to say that seeing my name appear in an ICv2 story is pretty cool.

Anyway, if you've got any questions, I'm happy to answer them over in the forum.
